10 Creative Christmas Activities for the Whole Family

We work hard the whole year and we often don’t have a lot of time to spend with a family. Christmas is the perfect time of year to have fun with the family and make some memories. You will get a lot more out of the holiday if you make an effort to be a little creative while making the most of your time together. You may say that you don’t have time to think about Christmas activities. Shopping, wrapping, cleaning, cooking and many other household chores leave you no time for fun activities. I’m here to help you with the list of creative Christmas activities for the whole family.
Creative Christmas Activities for the Whole Family

1. Play Christmas light bingo

Enjoy the Christmas lights around town while playing a game together. Make up some simple bingo cards with common Christmas decorations on them. You might try adding a Santa, star, reindeer, trees and other fun decorations. You can also add things like a house decorated in all blue lights or a yard with an inflatable decoration in it. Hand out the bingo daubers and take a drive. This is an easy and fun game your little ones will definitely love!

2. Hold a cookie party

Christmas is not Christmas without cookies. Have each guest bring the ingredients for one type of cookie and bake together. When the party is over, each guest takes home a few of each type of cookie. This can be a fun way to get cousins and other relatives together. If you celebrate Christmas with your kids only, you can just cook together. Although it’ll be a little bit messy, your children will have lots of fun. Ask them to decorate your Christmas cookies, make a hot chocolate and enjoy those sweet treats while watching a good Christmas movie.

3. Fill a stocking for someone

There are many people who don’t celebrate Christmas due to financial problems or because they are absolutely alone. If you know such people, make this Christmas more meaningful to them. From a little Christmas gift to a stocking filled with some tasty treats and decorations, everything will be appreciated. Grab your family and make some simple stockings and fill them with small gifts for someone who needs them. The entire family can work on one stocking or each person can choose someone to give the gifts to.

4. Make fingerprint ornaments

Probably you have plenty of beautiful Christmas ornaments and you are looking for some new and creative ideas. Take a small piece of clay and roll it out. Cut it into any shape you like and have each person press their finger into the clay, in different directions. Draw a line between them all and paint each fingerprint with a bright holiday color once dry.

5. Sing carols to long distance family members

If your children can’t visit their grandparents this Christmas, this family activity is right for them. Put your phone on speakerphone and call up the grandparents to sing to them. This is a great way to connect with people that don’t live near your and can’t visit for the holidays. Join your kids and sing Christmas carols together.

6. Read a story together

If you are trying to teach your kids to read more books, Christmas is the perfect time to do it. Whether you choose to read the Nativity story or something different, like The Polar Express, this can be a time of bonding. Sit together and read the story while sipping hot chocolate. Make this an annual tradition.

7. Have a family movie night

Although I always recommend parents to read more books with kids, watching a good kid-friendly movie is also a great activity to try every now and then. There are many wonderful Christmas movies for everyone. Pick a movie that your whole family will enjoy and then base the entire evening around it. You can have a craft for younger kids, as well as food based on the movie theme. Try to choose a holiday movie to get everyone in the Christmas spirit.

8. Make a family activity jar

While everyone is enjoying the holidays together, take some time to make a fun family activity jar. Choose a jar or tin and have everyone decorate it. Next, everyone writes down ideas for family activities on slips of paper and puts them in the jar. Every day, pull one suggestion out and do it with the family. The holiday season is about fun and spending time with family, so make sure you write lots of ideas.

9. Decorate the house

Your home doesn’t have to be perfect, so if you usually want to do it yourself, this is the year to include the family. Everyone can help string lights and decorate the Christmas tree. If you need to, rearrange things a little once the kids are in bed. Decorating as a family can be a fun way to enjoy the holidays and bring out that Christmas spirit.

10. Build a snow village

Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean you should stay at home. Get out in the snow and start making some snow houses and snowmen with the family. You’ll have fun returning to your childhood and your kids will love playing in the snow with you. Invite your friends and neighbors to make this activity more interesting and fun.
