6 Tricks to Start a New Beauty Routine for Healthier Skin and Hair
Like any goal or resolutions, I think the best way to start something that sticks is to keep it simple. A routine can take a little while to settle in to, so again, let’s make it something that fits into your life easily. Good skin and hair is something I am pretty sure we all crave. And the fantastic news is that it is not rocket science. It does not have to be expensive, messy or time consuming either. Here are six simple ideas to effortlessly slip into your daily routine.
1. Start with the inside
We all know the importance of our diet for our skin and hair. If I told you to start juice fasting or detoxing, then you might start, but it would not be a routine that lasts. Instead, think about subtle changes and food swaps that are both sustainable and worthwhile.
A little less sugar and saturated fat in your diet will leave you with clearer skin over time. And don’t forget that good nutrition helps healthy hair growth. Just be sensible and the benefits will begin to show through.
2. Hydrate before you caffeinate
I am a huge fan of coffee, so I would never tell you to cut it out, because I would never stop drinking it either. But something I did to improve my skin and my overall health was to get into the routine of hydrating first thing in the morning.
I simply down a tall glass of water while my coffee is brewing. I used to spend the brewing time scrolling through Facebook on my phone, so I can’t say I am missing anything important. What could be simpler?

3. Ditch the chemicals
There are so many expensive and unnatural products on the market today. If you struggle with breakouts, then the chances are that you have spent a great deal of money over the years trying to rid yourself of spots.
But have you ever tried stripping things back to just soap and water? It might sound overly simple, but if you are throwing too many chemicals at your skin, it will not know how to behave. Going back to basics can save you time, money and hassle.
4. Simple secret weapon
While we are talking about keeping things really simple, my secret weapon for skin breakouts costs about the same as a latte and is available from any grocery store or pharmacy.
Sudocrem is an antibacterial zinc cream that you may associate with sunburn and rashes. It is also great for gently clearing up breakouts. Try applying to clean skin at bedtime and give it a few days. You might be surprised, I know that I was.
5. Turn down the heat
I used to straighten my hair every day, resulting in broken ends and more trips to the hairdresser. These days I make it a point to wear my hair in an up-do for at least half of my week.
Cutting down on the straightening actually saves me time in my morning routine, and I still look smart for work. And best of all, when I do let my hair down I do not have broken ends.

6. Choose a clever color
Rather than fighting against nature, choose a hair color that works with what you have got. I have always been a brunette, but since my grays have started making themselves known I do not want to fight them anymore.
This year I am going ‘bronde’ – light brown with blonde high and lo-lights. The idea is to blend the ‘silver highlights’ in with the blonde, rather than trying to cover them up. As a general rule of thumb, the less we fight with our hair and let it do its thing, the healthier it will be.
So who would have thought that a new beauty routine could be one that saves you time and money too? Why not make 2017 the year of the ‘make under’ and keep things a little more natural? Do you have any simple and easy beauty hacks? Please do share below in the comments.
